It was limited to only 1000 pieces ever manufactured and sold worldwide, 800 of which were speculated to have been produced in 18k yellow gold and only 200 in 18k white gold, making this timepiece extra rare.  During the build-up of the 5100 release date, it is believed that the idea of the first Rolex quartz watch, as well as it being the first with sapphire glass, was rather desirable and all 1000 pieces were pre-sold before production had even began.
